THE RABI MUSAH STORY

Football is the most popular sport in Africa and Ghana is traditionally a powerhouse of African football even though the sport is believed to be dying off due to lack of corporate sponsorship.

The male participant sport is popular amongst girls experiencing prejudice and discrimination in their daily career pursuit.

Rabiatu Musah is a defender who started her football career at Osei Tutu Ladies , a junior side of Ghana Women’s Premier League outfit, Fabulous Ladies. She later gained promotion to the senior side but left to Goaso Unity Ladies in few months to help them in the middle league which they failed to qualify. Rabi as she is popularly known left after a period of two years back to Fabulous Ladies.

Rabi has served her mother club for a perfect period of time, twelve years , with parental disagreement to her career in between the years due to financial difficulties after Senior High School. They opted for a different career choice which she turned down.

Kelley Maureen O’Hara , two- times FIFA Women’s World Cup champion and gold Olympic gold medalist once said ; “Do what you love, if you love something you aren’t going to care about the sacrifices you’re making to do whatever it is” . Rabi kept her focus and pressed on.

She gained call up in the year 2014 and 2016 to the female U17 national team. In 2018 she was again called to the Black Princesses camp (U20) but was later dropped for the senior national team few months later , Black Queens.

The Women’s Premier League kicked off few months back with Rabi captaining her three times Women’s Premier league runner side in six out of seven matches in the first round .

On February 27 , 2021, Kumasi Sports Academy hosted Fabulous Ladies at the Ejisu Okese Park where Rabiatu unintentionally hit referee, Faizatu Jakpa whiles gesturing, an act adjudged to have breached the laws of the beautiful game and its regulations stated in Article 12(4) of the Ghana Football Association Disciplinary code.

The defender has been banned from partaking in football related activities for a year with immediate effect from April 13 ,2021 to April 12 , 2021 alongside a fine of two – thousand Ghana cedis (2000gh) due to plea for leniency.

The vision of a champion is bent over, drenched in sweat at the point of exhaustion when nobody else is looking , a quote from Mariel Margaret Hamm- Garciaparra , retired American soccer icon, Rabi continues to train personally amidst the situation.

In an interview with her ,she said ; “ It was not intentional ,I’m training till the ban is lifted and just hoping this won’t disqualify me from national duties. My team has been helpful for these past days giving me an assurance of appeal for a short term ban”

The two times FA Cup runner believes whatever brings you down will eventually make you stronger just as Alex Morgan once stated. She is optimistic of a better comeback soon.
