Ahead of this year’s International Day for Persons with Disability which comes off on Thursday, December 3, 2020, the Secretary General of the Ghana Wheelchair Basketball Federation (GWBF), Lion Wilson Agbesi Yao, has entreated journalists in the country to help educate the public on issues related to persons with disabilities.
This, he believes, will go a long way to remove the stereotype tagged on them and equally give the opportunity to explore their environment.
Mr. Agbesi said this in a press release to the media ahead of the celebration which will be marked globally this year.
Making reference to one of the favourites quotes of the President of the Federation, Mr. Agbesi said: “People with Disability are perfect beings with God’s approved stamp; they can equally do excellent jobs when given the opportunity. That it is wrong and unjust for society to look down on them”.
The statement continued: “Whether a person was disabled at birth, through an accident or by whatever situation, they deserve same social, economic and national opportunities as the ‘abled’ in society.”
He also expressed appreciation to all journalists who have devoted their time over the years to projecting disability sports in diverse ways.
“The media men keep doing great job, and it’s our wish and prayer they do more than they are doing currently,” the statement further read.
December 3rd is the day set aside by United Nation for marking International Day for Persons with Disability which is celebrated globally.
Persons with Disability in Ghana will observe the day with lot of activities .
Mr. Agbesi also extended his goodwill message to the general public with regards to the need for peace and unity, before, during and after the 2020 General Elections.
He reminded Ghanaians not to see the election as ‘do or die affairs’ but to rather see it as an opportunity for them to once again to elect leaders to run the affairs of the nation in the next four years.
He concluded by wishing all persons with Disability in Ghana and the world at large as well as all stake holders in the disability fraternity well.
