Swansea City’s hopes of staging a return to the English Premier League next season has ended after suffering a 3-1 away defeat to Brentford in the return leg of the Championship playoffs.
A superb half-volley from Andre Ayew in the first leg gave Swansea City an advantage going into the return encounter.
The Swans failed to held on to the goal advantage as Brentford overturned the deficit and won 3-2 on aggregate at the Griffin Park.
Goals from Ollie Watkins, Emiliano Marcondes and Bryan Mbeumo sealed victory as Swansea pulled one back through Rhian Brewster in the 78th minute.
The result prevents the Swans from playing in the playoff finals.
Brentford takes on the winner from the game between Fulham and Cardiff City.
The Ghana International finished the season as Swansea City’s top scorer after bagging 18 goals in all competition this season.
