Ethiopia’s Lydia Tafesse is set to make history

Ethiopia’s Lydia Tafesse is set to make history by becoming the first female referee to take charge of a senior men’s game at a continental level tournament in Africa.

The 39-year-old has been named as the only woman on a list of 20 referees for this year’s African Nations Championship (CHAN) which begins in Cameroon in April.

Tafesse has previously officiated at the Africa Women Cup of Nations and Fifa Women’s World Cup.

Last year, Tanzania’s Jonesia Rukyaa Kabakama became the first woman to referee at a junior level continental tournament by taking charge of games at the Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations.
