2019 Africa Games: Ghana finally snatches bronze

Ghana’s Winnifred Ntumy has won Ghana’s first medal, a bronze, in 45kg weightlifting at the ongoing Africa Games in Rabat, Morocco, and the president of the Ghana Weightlifting Federation (GWF), Ben Nunoo Mensah, is predicting more success from the sport.

Fifteen-year-old Ntumy who was discovered two years ago successfully lifted the snatch, clean and jerk and totals to secure Ghana’s first medal.

For the records, Winifred has won a medal in each weightlifting event she has competed in since joining the sport a few years ago.

Rosina Randafiari of Madagascar claimed the gold medal while Nigeria’s Stella Peter took the silver medal.
The young talent who is a product of the Indomie Talent Identification Project had earlier won bronze in the Africa Weightlifting Championships in Cairo, Egypt, in April this year.

Mr Nunoo-Mensah revealed via telephone that two other lifters, David Akre and Jeremiah Gannie, are likely to be on the podium in their weight categories of 61kg and 81kg on Monday and Wednesday, respectively.

“I am not surprised about Ntumi’s feat. She achieved the same at the seniors championship in Egypt and replicated same last year in the junior’s championship,” he noted.

According to Mr Nunoo-Mensah, who also doubles as the president of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOV), Commonwealth and Africa medallists Christian Amoah and Forrester Osei would also make it to the podium when they take centre stage in the 89kg competitions on Wednesday.

“Despite the myriad of challenges, we are making a lot of headway in weightlifting and we are very grateful to Indomie Ghana for partnering us to recruit talents such as  David Akre, Ntumi, Osei  and Amora.”

He called on the government to support the efforts of Indomie Ghana to discover more weightlifting talents for the country.
With this bronze feat achieved yesterday, Team Ghana can now boast of a medal after a week of competition.
